AJ Saville takes out Southern Supreme House of the Year 2018
Congratulations to Alistair and his team on this absolutely stunning build. This substantial 802sqm house was constructed in keeping with the historic buildings of the area: small-scale, with steep pitched slate and iron roofs. It echoes the rural connections of the site, with thick walls, either plastered or clad in local stone with deep recessed vertical windows.
Respect for local history hasn’t prevented this magnificent home from pulling out all the stops on the luxury front. Every modern comfort you could possibly want has been catered for. The entrance to this four bedroom, four-plus bathroom house is through an impressive aged stone gallery with curved glass linking to the kitchen, lounge, living and sun room, where fireplaces, exposed steel trusses and a bank of skylights feature.
Two more glass curved links carry through to bedrooms, for guests in one direction and the master in the other. A self-contained loft above the garage has a New York studio-feel, using red brick sourced from Invercargill’s Lorne Hospital and aged oak flooring. Truly a house that will stand the test of time.
