Calls for more conservative management of crayfish stocks

If you were one of the 4000 individuals who completed our recent Crayfish Crisis survey, thanks a lot!

Together we generated the largest survey of crayfish interests in Aotearoa. Our collective voice was loud and clear.

The question is, will Stuart Nash’s decision align with the 81% of survey respondents calling for more conservative management of our precious CRA 2 stock?

We are anticipating a Ministerial decision in the next few days so please stay tuned.

Thanks also to the people who donated to the cause. You have gone the extra mile. We appreciate your commitment to the future health of our fisheries.

Let’s recap on the whirlwind ride we’ve had over the past couple of months.

With your help we have:

  1. Collaborated with the largest recreational fishing groups in NZ to present a joint crayfish submission to MPI.
  2. Attracted thousands of views to the Crayfish Crisis video. Watch this short video (right) to get a better understanding of the issues.
  3. The Crayfish Crisis survey attracts the largest public response to crayfish issues. By the time we submitted, 39% of respondents supported MPI’s Option 4, and 42% want the Minister to close the Hauraki Gulf – Bay of Plenty CRA 2 area to all fishing for a period.
  4. Distributed an easy to read summary of the crayfish submissionincluding a preview of the early CRA 2 survey results.

Cooperation is getting us over the line

In addition to the 4000 people who completed the Crayfish Crisis survey, thanks also to the various organisations who offered support and actively drove awareness of the crayfish issues through their channels. Heroes all of you!
