Does solar electricity stack up for you?

Solar electricity systems (also known as photovoltaics, PV systems, or solar panels) convert sunlight into electricity. This calculator helps you assess solar for your house.

You’ll be asked for your address and about your electricity usage – we recommend you have an electricity bill handy. It will take you about 10-15 minutes to work through the questions.

The calculator doesn’t consider batteries as these are not cost effective at this time.

At the end, you will get a detailed report estimating how much value you would get from solar. So, grab your power bill, make yourself comfy and let’s get started.

First, watch our short video for more information on solar.

The solar calculator incorporates solar data sourced from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) through its SolarView service.

The solar calculator is designed to assess the value of a solar electricity system for your household. You will be asked to provide details about your house, your energy usage, and how you intend to pay for a solar electricity system. The tool will then estimate the value of installing a solar electricity system at your house, including your estimated total earnings (if any) over the course of 25 years, and the estimated number of years that it would take for you to earn back your initial investment.
