Fletchers fallout likely to fall hardest on workers and subbies

Fletcher employees may be deployed in other sectors of the company but the future is less certain for the larger army of sub contractors and their labour-only workers.

Fletcher said its Building and Interiors division would not tender for projects after it completes 73 contracts including Christchurch’s Justice and Emergency buildings (nearly complete) plus an airport hotel (mid-year), and the convention centre in Auckland, in about two years.

E tū union coordinator Ron Angel said he had not discussed redundancies and any talks would focus first on deployment in other divisions of the company, which might not be easy if workers’ skills were primarily in commercial work rather than residential.
